Chipping Mechanic

Their tasks may include producing workpieces of precise shape and dimensions for machines, apparatus and installations using milling and boring operations on conventional or numerically controlled machine tools. They machine castings and forgings, welded constructions, semi-finished products and premachined workpieces of metal and non-metal materials using mainly multiple-cutting tools.

Chipping mechanics specializing in the milling field work to technical documents, plan the production sequence and draw up programs for controlled machines. They set up milling machines or boring and milling machines, including the tools and fixtures. They also monitor the production process, check the quality of the workpieces, assess the results of the work and implement quality assurance measures.

These tasks are performed independently in one-off and series production, taking the relevant regulations, safety provisions, documents and instructions into account.

• Setting-up of milling machines or boring and milling machines, tools and fixtures
• Aligning and cutting of tools, workpieces and fixtures on milling machines or boring and milling machines
• Operating and monitoring milling machines or boring and milling machines
• Producing, inputting and optimizing programs and fabrication of workpieces on numerically controlled machine tools
• Machining of workpieces on milling machines or boring and milling machines or numerically controlled machine tools
• Inspection of workpieces and quality assurance
• Sharpening of boring and turning tools and inspection of milling, boring and turning tools
• Maintenance of milling machines or boring and milling machines

Duration of Apprenticeship: 3 1/2 years Trainees who perform well may be put forward for examination early.
