MAN Turbo's objective is to supply products that convince the client with their technical parameters and high quality as well as an optimum price-performance ratio. All products form part of a product family that is modular in structure and expandable, utilizing state-of-the-art technology.
A long-term commitment to research and development guarantees continuous improvements in performance and efficiency, cost optimization and a prolonged life for existing products. MAN Turbo also develops new, competitive products on an ongoing basis to meet market and customer requirements. This process gives rise to a large number of patent applications.
The entire R&D process is integrated into a collaborative network linking national and international universities, research facilities and institutes. Logical testing of new product features in laboratories and on test stands, not only in the company but also on development test stands throughout Europe, and the widespread use of modern software offer the client a guarantee of fully developed products at the cutting edge of technology.
R & D at the company focuses on:
- Thermodynamics
- Aerodynamics
- Vibration analysis
- Mechanical developments
- Laboratory and analysis technique
- Material sciences
- Design.
Driven Equipment (Development Projects)
Axial Compressor
Optimizing the blade design makes it possible to reduce the number of blade stages and improve aerodynamics, resulting in an increase in capacity with simultaneous running stability of the rotor.
Centrifugal Compressor
With the development of the MOPICO to give the HOFIM and HOFIM Sealed, the first positive project references are already available. The HOFIM Sealed is an oil-free, hermetically sealed, directly driven barrel compressor for the injection, storage and transportation (pipeline) of natural gas.
High-Pressure Compressor (Centrifugal)
Further development of the compressor, giving it a rating for discharge pressures of up to 1000 bar, also includes making it suitable for demanding gases such as acid gas, for example.
Integrally Geared Compressor
In the case of compressors with volume flows of up to 230,000 m³/h, further development of the integrally geared compressor, above all for the air separation industry, offers critical advantages compared with other compressors in this output class: Optimization of the impeller design not only results in a more compact compressor, but also in greater operational flexibility for innumerable applications in the oil and gas industries and industrial gases.
Isotherm Compressor
Developing the RIKT isotherm compressor further by adding a further overhung-mounted stage offers the customer reliable quality with a higher throughput and greater efficiency.
Process-Gas Screw Compressor
In recent years, the mechanical efficiency of these compressors has been improved by the use of dry gas seals. The trend is in the direction of greater discharge pressures (previously approx. 50 bar max.), greater pressure differences and greater volume flows (the latter thanks to an increase in speed or bigger machines). Expanding the MAN Turbo modular system offers a greater range of uses for the machines.
Drivers (Development Projects)
Gas Turbines
R&D activities are concentrated on achieving a continuous increase in the performance level and efficiency of the machines. A parallel objective is to extend the service intervals by a substantial amount.
Steam Turbines
sing three-dimensional calculation methods, work is progressing aimed specifically at improving the high- and intermediate-pressure blading of turbines further.
Control and Monitoring Systems (Development Projects)
Instrumentation & Controls
R&D trends tend to be moving in the direction of new control concepts above all. These are being subjected to extensive testing in preparation for subsequent practical deployment. Further developments and innovations in instrumentation and control engineering are aimed at enhancing the quality of control and achieving greater machine and plant reliability.
Diagnosis & Monitoring
With the remote diagnosis system irds® (Intelligent Remote Diagnostic System) it is possible to acquire and evaluate operating data virtually instantly. The opportunity thus exists, above all in connection with service contracts, to detect any deviations from the target state at an early stage and to initiate corrective measures immediately. The system is being developed systematically with regard to its range of uses and transmission speed.
Research & Development Outlook
Development is focusing on the first tandem applications for the HOFIM Sealed, which has already been tested successfully in practice. Whether connected in series or in parallel, these will add the asset of even greater flexibility to satisfy a wide range of demands to the existing advantages of the HOFIM Sealed.
